Britain’s first Drag King bar opens

Making Herstory At Austin Pride With Jackie Huba- About Magazine

Sue Northover and wife Frankie Du Mongh have unveiled the UK’s first karaoke bar aimed at male impersonators.

The pair say the the venue – Kings Bar, in Blackpool – has proven extremely popular since its opening.

Sue – who works as compere at the bar whilst dressed as her male alter-ego Rogue – said: “We’re having an absolute blast.”

And although the bar’s website highlights that the bar is “owned by women for women” including transgender customers, everybody is more than welcome.

“Absolutely everybody is welcome, and we do get all kinds in here, but we provide free moustaches for women that want to get in on the act,” she told the Daily Star.

The pair – who also offer a Drag King Workshop – said the the reason they opened the bar is because they want “drag kings to be as respected as drag queens.

“There shouldn’t be any difference between me performing a Queen classic and a drag queen singing a Whitney Houston song.”

Frankie also pointed out that drag is not always linked to homosexuality, stating: “People assume drag kings must be lesbians, but it’s not necessarily about sexuality, it’s about expressing yourself and embodying a different character.”

Lady Bunny Turns Donald Trump’s Racism And Misogyny Into New Holiday Classic

All we want for Christmas is for Donald Trump to not be elected president in 2016 and Lady Bunny agrees. The drag superstar blends politics with her unique style of caustic comedy into a musical tirade against the “shrieking Buffalo wing that fell into a urinal,” which is how comedian Chris Hardwick describes him. It’s all set to the tune of the seasonal classic “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”
