Glee Star Alex Newell Will Headline 2017 Diana Awards
Historic Diana Foundation Announces Glee Star As Headliner For 64th Annual Gala
HOUSTON — JAN 26 — Singing sensation Alex Newell from the Fox hit show Glee has been announced as the headlining act for the 64th Annual Diana Award to be held in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 18, 2017.
Recognized as the oldest continuously active gay organization in the United States, The Diana Foundation proudly announced that well-known comedian and entertainer, Sister Helen Holy will host the black-tie gala this year, at the downtown House of Blues. Also included in the historic evening will be traditional local, live stage production numbers; community beneficiary recognition; and more.
Alex Newell burst onto the television scene as Wade “Unique” Adams, a male-to-female transgender character on Glee. Newell’s role was a groundbreaking piece of television acting, and Newell was eventually promoted from guest star to recurring cast member to main cast member.
“We’re excited to have Alex Newell, a phenomenal vocalist, trailblazer, and advocate for the LGBTQ community, join us for the 64th Diana Awards,” said Tanner Williams, president of The Diana Foundation. “Continued support for this historic and iconic Houston event from performing artists like Alex Newell and our local community allows us to provide much-needed financial support for our local beneficiaries.”
Founded in 1953, The Diana Foundation has focused on assisting the needs of the LGBTQ+ community by distributing funds to organizations that are dedicated to providing services that enhance the lives of individuals.
Beneficiaries for the 2016-17 fiscal year include The Botts Collection: University of Houston LGBT Archive Endowment Fund, Lazarus House, and Out for Education.
